MEDIA  STATEMENT: SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION TO HONOUR THE NELSON MANDELA MONTH, JULY 2016

In honour of the life and legacy of the first President of the democratic South Africa, the late President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the South African Embassy in Moscow has planned various activities in response to the call made by President Mandela in 2009, when he said “it is in your hands now”.  The planned activities will take place during the Mandela Month, July 2016.

Volunteer Work at the Palliative Care Department of Morozovskiy Children’s Hospital, 15 and 19 July

The Embassy, together with Aspen Pharmaceutical Company in Moscow, has volunteered to paint walls, clean windows and do gardening at the Palliative Care Department of Morozovskiy Children’s Hospital in Moscow on 15 and 19 July 2016.

Officials from the Embassy and Aspen Pharmaceutical Company will also donate the following items, which were requested by the Morozovskiy Children’s Hospital:
• Chairs for the dining room;
• Blinds / shutters for 2 windows in the dining room and possibly 4 sht. v Chamber;
• Baby crib mobiles for beds;
• Water cooler;
• Diapers;
• Disposable diapers 90/60;
• Wet wipes;
• Care products;
• Liquid hand soap; and
• Aspiration catheters.

Nelson Mandela International Day Celebrations, 18 July

On 18 July 2016, the Embassy, in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Moscow, will host the Nelson Mandela International Day Celebrations at the Lotte Hotel.  In this respect, the ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ film will be screened, in remembrance of the life of President Mandela.  Invitations have been sent out and only confirmed guests will be accommodated due to limited space. 

A booklet on President Mandela’s quotes and pictures will be distributed during the event and will also be available at the Embassy throughout the Mandela month.

Donation to the Endocrinology Department of the Morozovskiy Children’s Hospital in Moscow, 19 July

The Embassy and the United Nations Information Centre in Moscow have agreed to collect and donate funds to the Endocrinology Department of the Morozovskiy Children’s Hospital in Moscow.  To this end, a donation box has been placed at the entrance of the UN House and money collected will be handed to the hospital on 19 July.

Volunteer Work at the Domodedovo Children’s Home in Moscow, 25 July

The Embassy and Aspen Pharmaceutical Company in Moscow have made arrangements to paint walls, clean windows and do gardening at the Domodedovo Children’s Home on 25 July.  Officials from the Mission and Aspen Pharmaceutical Company in Moscow will also donate the following items, which were requested by Domodedovo Children’s Home:

• Soccer balls, and
• Table tennis nets.

The South Africa’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, H.E. Ms Nomasonto Maria Sibanda-Thusi, calls on everyone to devote 67 minutes of their time on 18 July or any other day during the Mandela Month, July 2016 to contribute to humanity through volunteering and public service.
